My New Goal: 10K

Happy APRIL! The best month of the year because yours truly's birthday is this month! I may or may not be turning a quarter of a century old. And I may or may not be freaking out about it. But that's for another post...

Today, I have some exciting news that I have been pumped to share with you all! I have set a new goal for myself: To run my very first 10k! EEK! Just saying it freaks me out. (No, this is not an April Fools joke.)

To give a bit of background, I just started running about a year ago. Check out this post last year to see how it all started. I grew up an athlete, but never a runner. But last year I was bit with the "bug" and love it! I'm not the every-day 7 mile runner, but I like to run a few miles a few times a week. I obviously love the exercise aspect of it: keeping myself fit, endorphins  good for the heart, etc. But I also love the mental benefits: time to clear my mind, de-stress, reflect on life, etc.

Pictures below are of my very first 5K at Keeneland! I've run 2 total.

Kelly, Amanda, and myself.

My goal has always been to just complete the race without stopping. I'm not as concerned about my time but was happy with 30 minutes!!

In January I wrote about running my longest distance ever here.

68 laps = 4 miles

I was shocked I could run that far without much training up to it. It proves to me that it really is 90% mental and this gives me some faith that I might actually be able to run 6.2 miles without collapsing.

After researching several 10K training plans online, I decided to customize my own using little bits of a few that I liked. I start my "pre" training plan this week where I'm getting runs in for the next 2 months wherever I can. I am traveling A LOT (Denver, LA, Seattle, Louisville, Nashville) so it's going to be hit or miss. But by the end of May, the real training schedule starts!

I'm not the most self-disciplined individual, so we'll see how this goes! The race is called the Bluegrass 10,000 and it's on July 4! It'll be a hot one! Here's my 7 week training plan:

Saturday was such a nice day outside! It finally felt like Spring! We went to John's Run/Walk Shop so I could get fitted for new running shoes. It was cool how they study your feet and old running shoes to find you the perfect new pair. I ended up with these spiffy New Balances (and dropped a pretty penny on them).

So, now that I have the gear and the date set, it's time to hit the pavement! No looking back now!

And it looks like my running buddy is ready to get started too....

Or not.

I'm terrified. But is a goal really worth setting if you're not? I'll obviously be keeping you posted!

I have never been a runner, but I always tell my boyfriend that maybe I would run with him if I had cute running shoes.
But after seeing so many bloggers setting running goals, it is kinda giving me the bug!
Good luck with your training :)

  6. I just downloaded the Couch to 10k app for my phone. It's free and you can skip ahead in the training if you've already gotten to the 5k point. It was just the tool I need to sign up for my first 10k at the end of the summer. Good luck!
