Blogging Battle

Tim: I wanna do a blog

Tim: But I think I'm too lazy

Me: You want to do a blog???

Tim: About fantasy

Me: Like football and baseball?

Tim: Yea

Tim: How many reads to do you get a month?

Me: Like 3500

Tim: I need 3501 then.

Me: PSH. You'll get like 7

Tim: Probably

/  /  /  /  /  /

Tim: 5 new followers today. In your face

/  /  /  /  /  /

Me: I have no ideas for a blog post this week

Tim: Bc you suck and blogging and I'm awesome

Needless to say, my boyfriend and I are competitive. About everything. And now that he has inserted himself into the blogging world, there is currently a full-blown blogging battle in my house.

I honestly thought he was joking about blogging when he told me this about SIX days ago. Now he is already posting daily, getting over 100 views per post, and is a published contributing writer for a fantasy sports site. Did I mention he started blogging SIX DAYS AGO???

Every time I walk in the door I get "How many reads did you get today??", "I got 3 new twitter followers today", "In your face..." etc etc.

Not to mention that I set up his entire blog, layout, created a logo/button for him, etc. He's not the most techy person and let's face it, when you first start out in blogging you know pretty much nothing. It took me about a year to learn as much as I do about buttons, codes, layout, links, promoting, etc.

And this little jerk face is becoming famous overnight. So, being the loving, supportive girlfriend that I am, I decided to resort to the most appropriate tactic: photo blackmail.

DO NOT READ MY BF's BLOG! I'm sure it's awful and a total snooze fest. So what if he knows EVERYTHING about every athlete in the NFL, MLB, etc. Who cares?

I mean, do you really want advice from a guy who...

makes out with dogs...

is clearly a bit special...

does kissy faces...

still owns pleated pants...

is clearly cruel to animals...

has no regard for water safety (note lack of life jacket)...

is terrible at braiding hair...

purchases cat towers...

wears his girlfriend's clothes while cooking...

plays puppy tug-o-war with his mouth....

Clearly this is NOT a person you want to be taking any advice from. Sports or otherwise.

Don't read his blog.

May the best (and prettiest) blogger win.

P.S. ((I really hope he doesn't see this post))

And because Tim's blog is about fantasy and I said "sports" a lot, I'm linking up with my girl Venus!
(I promise I'm a sport fanatic too! #madskillz)

Men: 4 Style Rules You Should Never Break

Hey guys! This post is for you! Don't say I never cater to the male demographic. ;)

/  /  /  /  /

Looking your very best is something that almost everyone aspires to, but with so much conflicting fashion advice on TV and in the magazines, it can be tricky to know what you should do to get ahead in the style stakes.

Here, we take a look at four style rules that you should never break.

Dress for the occasion

Have you ever noticed how good you feel when you pull out all the stops? If you’ve got a special occasion coming up, make sure that you put the effort in. Often, you’ll enjoy the event much more. Similarly, don’t feel that you have to go overboard all the time. A well-tailored blazer with some smart jeans might be all you need when it comes to a night out on the town.

Go for style instead of trend

The shops are full of new ranges and lines each and every season, but this doesn’t mean that you have to rush out and buy everything. Instead of trying to follow fashion, develop your own personal style and make clothing choices based on this. It’ll be much cheaper, and you’ll become known for your impeccable sense of style rather than just for being a clotheshorse!

Less is more when it comes to quantity

Most of us have half a wardrobe full of clothes that we just never wear. Not only is this a waste of money, but it’s also taking up valuable storage space in your home. Rather than constantly buying new items, focus on adding just a few items each season that will last the long haul. This approach will allow you to buy high quality items and even a few designer pieces instead of endless cheaper items that you’ll never wear.

Comfort is key

No matter how good you look, it just doesn’t work if you aren’t comfortable. People can always tell if someone isn’t enjoying their outfit, and it will never impress anyone. If those shoes you like are pinched and leave your feet feeling sore, ditch them. You’ll have a much better time and won’t have to put up with the after effects for days afterwards! When you buy online, you can try purchases on in the comfort of your own home before making a commitment. This could be a good plan if you’re looking for something that you’ll feel great in.

Sticking to these four key areas, you should find that fashion and shopping becomes much more fun. Remember that if you can’t enjoy your wardrobe choices, what’s the point?

Do you have your own set of style rules? We’d love to hear them!

Thursday Thoughts

Hellooo! I'm excited to join some lovely ladies to host Thursday Thoughts today! Make sure to visit Jaime and Jamie ! And link up your own thoughts below! Tweet your post with #thursdaythoughts.

Before we proceed, I want to announce the winner of the Anchor Necklace from Yours Charmingly!

Now for some Thursday Thoughts:

  • This whole house selling/buying process is CRAY. I know people always say that and trust me, I have seen 2343 house hunting shows on HGTV, but until you are IN it, you're like "Whatevs, that won't happen to me!" We sold our house (closing in 2 weeks) and had a new one lined up. Well then there were inspection and appraisal issues and so it looks like we no longer have a house to move into. While I was REALLY bummed when I heard the news (I really wanted that one), there are some other great houses out there and I'm hopeful we can land the right one. We just have to move into an apartment for now until we can close. (Moving twice is for the birds!!)
  • Why is Britney Spears still making "music"? I just heard her song "Ooh La La" on the radio and almost drove into oncoming traffic. It sounds like a Little Mermaid song on acid. Serious, she just needs to hang up the mic and go volunteer at a homeless shelter or something.

  • Are you watching the Bachelorette? I'm struggling to like a lot of the guys this season. No idea why she is digging Brooks or Ben, yuck. My favorite is ex-baseballer Chris! Love those tall, slim, quiet types!
  • We are thinking about getting another dog once all the move madness is over. (Yes, I am aware that would classify us as animal hoarders. Feel free to judge.) We will obviously adopt, and I've been all over the board with what I want. But currently, I'm wanting to rescue a red doberman. So, it would look like Piper on steroids. Anyone have a doberman? Thoughts?

  • My friend Amanda (previous partner-in-crime co-worker) is in town this weekend! You may know her as Kaliwood's SPD guest blogger! So excited to see her face today after work for some drinks at our favorite place. She shares my love for queso dip, so OBVS we are besties. ((I'm still trying to get her to start back up her blog and share about her big move to SC! Maybe I'll work on her tonight!))

What #thursdaythoughts are you having?? Link up yo! ((And don't forget about the big giveaway Helene is hosting!))

Inappropriate gifs

Warning: Some images in this post may contain graphic material. Viewer discretion is advised.

So we have 3 pets. (See here.) Two cats and a pup. One cat, Ollie, is an outdoor lover and doesn't take any crap from Piper (dog). He just ignores her and swats her if she is too annoying. Junior (Fat Man) on the other hand, has despised Piper from day 1. His warning cry is heard on a daily basis as she attempts to play with him. He clearly is saying "Back up biotch before I swat your ass." However, Piper translates that as, "Oh I definitely want to play with you, please keep lunging at me."

This is what you call miss-communication.

I really just want peace in my house. (CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG??) I see pictures online of people cats and dogs snuggling up on the couch together. Hell, I saw a picture yesterday of a lion and a dachshund who were best friends! Surely, these two can work it out...

Then last night, I thought we were having a break through!

It started out like this. Piper was being really obnoxious, but instead of sassing her and running to hide under the bed, Junior was nuzzling her and rubbing up against her! (That's a form of cat affection FYI. Or their way to notify you that their food bowl is empty.) Piper was playfully nibbling his ear.

I was so excited! Look! They are besties!!!

That's when it took a turn for the worst....

Yup. That is my 1 year old female fixed dog humping my 3 year old male fixed cat. And now they have brought shame and disgrace to our household.

Of course Tim was encouraging them. I was giggling immaturely scolding them fiercely. And unfortunately, this was not a one-time occurrence. Junior has been violated at least one other time since this episode.

And now for something that isn't totally pointless: Click here to check out the fabulous group giveaway that Helene is hosting sponsored by yours truly!!!!

I'm really excited to share with the residents of Kaliwood this exciting promotion that Hpnotiq is running!* You know I love all things GLAM and the second round of this campaign is focused on glamorous nails! I'm all about getting manicures and pedicures because who doesn't feel just that much more fab when your nails are looking awesome?? I am a personal fan of some glitter, ombre effect, or odd-nail-out detail. I love the little things that take an ordinary manicure to fab!

As far as colors go, I personally like a darker, more saturated color for my fingernails in the fall/winter and a neutral tan or very dull color in the summer. But for the toes? I go all out! Paint me on some neon orange and I'm set! What are your favorite ways to glam up your nails? Do you rock a poppy pink for the summer? Do you like patterns or graphic designs? Are you a gel polish fanatic like me who loves that you can walk out of the salon with perfectly dry, chip-proof nails?? (Try it if you haven't! Your life will never be the same!)

Which brings me to why this campaign is great! All you have to do is share a photo of your fab nails and you have chances to win awesome prizes!! You're going to instagram those bad boys anyways! Might as well win some swag along the way! Click here to read the full rules for Hpnotiq’s GlamLouder: Bling It On! Contest & Sweepstakes.

Here's a pic of an at-home manicure job I did! I went with a dark maroon color, per my usual preference. But then I wanted to add some pizazz. So I polished on some silver glitter starting heavy at the base and tapering off about halfway through. This gives it a fun glitter obre effect! I loved how they turned out! GLAM!

Tweet YOUR glam nail photos with the hashtag #glamlouder!

Weekend via Pics

So we didn't really do anything too exciting this weekend. Your typical lounging, errands, dinner/drinks with friends, attempting a pool day that got rained out, etc. But, I do have one funny boyfriend and some funny animals so thought I would share some pics!

Clearly Ollie does whatever he pleases wherever he pleases...

Piper found a basset hound to play with at the dog park. That guy was pretty active, surprisingly!

Whenever someone says "Aw, cute dog!" when we are walking Piper, Tim always responds with, "It's a cat."

Then when people ask what kind of dog she is, he always says something ridiculous like "Dalmation" with a dead serious face. The poor people look so confused.

Piper bugging Dad while he's trying to sleep.

SIMBA!!!! I suppose I should stop before PETA comes after me.

This is what happens when you have a boyfriend who thinks he's HILARIOUS and is not afraid to embarrass the crap out of you. Tim completed this self addressed piece of mail for me and it was delivered last week. SERIOUSLY. I'm living with a 13 year old.

And lastly, I felt like making funfetti cupcakes last night (I mean are there any other kinds BESIDES funfetti???) So now the entire office gets some cupcakes today!

/  /  /  /

By the way.... Kaliwood's twitter got a face lift last week! Go check it out and follow me! I'm nice and always follow you back! :)

And so begins another week! Have a great one!!

6 Steps to Running A Successful Staff Meeting

I've been thinking of some career topics to hit lately. There are SO many facets of our daily jobs and they vary by industry. But, there are a lot of career tips that are applicable to any business field. So, I'll share some tips I've learned since I entered the real world!

Today we are talking about running your first staff meeting. Maybe you are managing a new project or running an event where the entire staff is involved. Whatever the case, there may be times when you are calling a meeting that can involve some of your superiors. So, let's make a good impression.

Here's my 6 steps for running a productive meeting:

1. Invite the appropriate staff members

The best thing to do is send out a meeting request or some form of formal invitation to the meeting. That way you can include everyone who is requested, and keep track of who can and cannot attend. Also, this gives you a chance to send out a brief summary of what the meeting is about, who is coming, and what is to be expected. Make sure to specify a date, time, and location of the meeting. If you need staff to brainstorm ahead of time, or prepare reports, be sure to let them know several days in advance.

2. Create and Distribute an Agenda

No one likes a meeting that isn't organize from the beginning. Getting something accomplished is much easier if you give some thought to the format of the meeting in advance. Jot down the main points that need to be discussed and then put together an agenda with times, if appropriate. If the meeting is extensive, plan break times and include those.
Send the agenda to all invited parties a few days in advance so that everyone has time to review it. Some may even ask to add items or adjust times. If necessary, update the agenda and always send out the most recent version.
Print copies of the agenda and bring them to the meeting in case others forget. Review the agenda before you begin so everyone can follow along and has a good understanding for what is going to be covered.

3. Have Clear Talking Points

These will be reflected in the agenda, but make sure you come to the meeting with specific things to discuss. If it's a pre-event meeting with staff make sure to cover the details of the event, responsibilities, possible issues, etc. If it is a project management meeting cover topics like goals, responsibilities, deadlines, expectations, etc. Always bring questions or concerns to the table as well. This is the time to collaborate with your fellow staff members to make your event or project as successful as possible.

4. Keep Communication Open

Ask for feedback along the way. Some meetings are more informational, and some are more collaborative. Either way, encourage others to give feedback and opinions on the topics that are being discussed. This helps bring new ideas and solutions to the table and gives other staff members a sense of being involved and valued.

5. Assign Action Items

In my experience the most common reason a meeting doesn't result in productivity is when action items are not reviewed before the meeting concludes. You can spend two hours discusses possible solutions to problems, unique ideas, and new directions, but if no one acts on them after the meeting, then it was all for nothing.
As the meeting progresses jot down notes when people say things like "I will contact", "I can look into that", "We  should research that", "Let's start promoting that next month", etc. Anything that takes action, mark it down.
Before the meeting wraps up, go through the list of things that needs to be done and assign each to a person. Also, give them a deadline of when it needs to be completed.

6. Follow-Up

Keep track of all the action items and their deadlines. If appropriate, send and email with a list of the tasks and respective deadlines as a follow-up to all that attended the meeting. Loop in people who were unable to attend, but are involved in the project. As deadlines approach, make sure to touch base with the person responsible to ensure deadlines will be met and tasks completed satisfactorily. Ensure all those involved that they can come to you with questions or concerns when following through on the action items. Don't wait until deadlines have passed to follow-up.

I hope some of these tips were helpful. Did I miss something? What else do you find to be useful when trying to have an effective meeting? Let me know!

Happy Friday and have a great weekend everyone!!

xoxo Rebecca
