Go Ahead...Make My Day!

Just wanted to share something with you all that made my day on Monday. I got an email from BlogHer that they were taking my "Letter to My Niece" post and featuring it in the family section! So of course I hurried over to and GASP! There was Sheryl Sandberg's face. And then, to the right, was my face! (Past the sweet little baby. I'm the adult.)

Of course it's just a coincidence that there is an article about Sheryl's book Lean In (that I am currently reading) directly next to my post, but I could definitely get use to see us in the same online real estate!

In other Kaliwood news:

Weekend Wrap-Up & The Collective

This weekend I had to work an event in Columbus. It worked out nicely since we have friends who live there, so we stayed with them and got to have some fun after work! Here are just some pics from the weekend...

Mom, you're leaving for the weekend? And you're taking that darn dog? Lovely. I shall rule the house for 3 days.

Best part about going north... Gold Star/Skyline Chili!

We went to the Ohio State Fair. And they had a petting zoo! So Tim and I were in heaven. Duh.

They had Kangaroos?? Normal.

And seals. Even more normal.

The lovely Abby & myself!

The goobers.

Things You Should Never Wear to Work... Even on Casual Friday

Here's a few tips on things you should NEVER wear to the office... and the looks people are giving you when you walk past them.

I'm sad to say that I got the inspiration for this post from people in my own building! It baffles me that people think these items are acceptable. They are barely acceptable in the grocery store, much less at your place of WORK!

Flip Flops

I don't care how colorful or be-dazzled they are. If they are rubber thongs, leave them for the beach or pool!! I mean, I take my dog out to go to the bathroom in rubber flip flops. Enough said.

I don't even like wearing the open-foot decorative sandals that I love so much.  At the office, I like to keep my feet covered as a general rule with flats or peep-toe wedges.

Sweat Shirt

I will admit, sometimes on casual Friday I wear a UK T-shirt and one of my Under Armour zip-up track jackets. But, I'm allowing myself a pass because I work for a sports association and UA is our corporate sponsor. So, I'm just promoting them! But, wearing a ratty old hoody from college? No thanks, peeps.

You would think people would realize shorts are a no-go for ALL professional environments, whether you are male or female. But alas, I've seen them. The ONLY possible exceptions are the professional shorts that are too short to be capri length but go almost to the knee (for women). Or MAYBE some tweed shorts in the fall with black leggings under them. But even those are pretty hard to pull off and are still risky (and you need to have the body to rock them). So, I would suggest just avoiding shorts altogether.

Old, ratty gym shoes?? Really? Show some respect people! These are only allowed on truck-loading day before a big event!

Anything with Spaghetti Straps

Sometimes I want to yell down the hall, "You know a camisole is UNDERwear right???" Sheesh. Anything without sleeves is a felony in the office. If it doesnt have AT LEAST a 1-inch wide strap (preferably 2 inches), then it better be covered up with a cardigan, blazer, sweater, etc.

Did I miss anything? Any hot mess items you have seen that need to be added to the list?

Blog Inspiration: Kaliwood Edition

I'm happy to join Helene and Sarah today for a post about what inspires me to write. I also thought this would be a good time to look back at some of my old posts and share some favorites. It's always fun to see what you were writing about a year ago. And since I happen to have a poor memory, this blog has always been a refresher for me of all the fun things I have experienced when I can't quite recall the details! So, here you go..

I started a blog (at the time entitled Kali Talks) in 2008. I was about to embark in a semester abroad so I used it as a way to document my time there and to share stories and photos with my family and friends back home. I lived in Dijon, France, but visited many places like Paris, Versailles, Munich, Rome, Milan, and Barcelona. This was before I knew anything about the blog-o-sphere that I do today. This was pre GFC numbers, giveaway, sponsor ads, link ups, etc.

I started my blog up again when I had been home for a while because I truly love to write and like to use this little space as an outlet for whatever I want. It was a time of big change for me as I graduated college, got a big-girl job, lost and found love, and really started out on my own.

After that the blog fell off for a while. I was living life. I was experiencing the independence of being kicked out of the nest, loving my job, working my ass off, and having a blast with new friends. I don't regret taking a break at all.

Last fall was when I decided to refocus, revamp, and come back with a vengeance. So, Kaliwood was born and I started to become a real blogger. The kind that we know in today's world.

Unlike the lucky few, Kaliwood hasn't gone viral. With that being said, I'm still amazed by the number of people who read my blog and I love that I can reach out to a few hundred people each time I put myself out there. So, thank you to those of you who have been here from the beginning, or those who are new Kaliwood residents. I truly appreciate each and every one of you.

My blog inspirations come from everyday life. A lot of the reason I came back was because I would get these ideas or opinions and needed an outlet that was longer than 140 characters. I guess this is my soap box. I will get ideas when I'm just in the shower thinking, or walking the dog, or in the middle of the night. I have to run to my phone to jot notes down so I don't forget. (Inspiration really hits me at the most inappropriate times, really. Thanks for that.)

Here's a list of some things that make my fingers fly across the keyboard and some of my favorites to go along with them... (in no particular order)

Whenever you stop by Kaliwood for a visit you can check out my TOP POSTS page. I update this regularly with the most popular posts that get a lot of traction. Also, check my left side bar at the bottom to view posts by category.

What inspires you?

Weekend Wrap-Up and Crazy Talk

We had a pretty uneventful weekend. Which is nice sometimes when these summer weekends seems to fill up with plans so quickly! So a quick recap and then a more serious topic...

Friday: We went to our favorite hibachi grill for dinner since we had a Groupon. It was so yummy (as it always is!). But I remembered why we don't go too often.. it's so expensive! But definitely a great place for a birthday or group dinner.

Saturday: We went to the pool in the early afternoon for a bit. Then we ran to Petsmart and other places to get some things for Piper. She desperately needed some new chew toys and blankets for her crate. That evening we took her to the dog park and then got some milk shakes. Mmm.

Sunday: Pretty boring day with lounging on the couch and laundry! We took Pipe for a run in the afternoon. I had gotten on MapMyRun to plan out our route before hand since we haven't run in this neighborhood before. I love that app, but wish it would give me GPS directions through my headphones as I am running if I uploaded the route beforehand. I did that hoping it would tell me, but apparently it doesn't.

So, I wrote the course on my hand. Pretty bootleg. But, alas, we still got lost. Tim was running way ahead (as usual) and took a wrong turn, so I did, and we were totally off. But, we got in our 2 miles so it was fine.

Also, we realized we are REALLY out of shape...

 Me after the run.

Piper after the run.

 Sooo.. more running this week!

And now on to another topic that I just felt compelled to write about this morning...

Have you ever had days where you are just really insecure? Maybe it's insecure in your job, or your relationship, or something else. But you just find that your confidence level is low and you're worry about all kind of things? I'm kind of having one of those days. I just feel a little... off. The most frustrating part is that I have no idea where it's coming from nor can I pinpoint a cause. I just have such a strange feeling that something isn't right and it's got me worried. And then I wonder if I'm just paranoid and it's nothing.

Now I realize I officially sound like a crazy person. I guess I'm just wondering if it's normal to have off-days where you don't feel totally on-your-game but can't think of a reason why. And if so, can you just bounce back and be your normal secure self again or do you have to search for the reason you're uneasy? Is it woman's intuition kicking in or just a temporary span of insanity?

/  /  /  /

Sorry for the heavy topic so early Monday morning! Not cool, I know. Have a great day!

P.S. 11 days and counting until we move out of the dungeon and into the new house!

A Letter to My Niece, Athena

Dear Athena,

It's your Aunt Kali here. You know, the only Aunt you have. But even if there were more, I'd be the coolest. I saw you the other day for the first time in a few months and WHOA you've grown a lot. I think you are about 1.5 years old. Or in mommy talk, 18 months. (For some reasons moms really care if you are off by a month or two.) It amazes me that we can now tell you to do something and you go do it. Just like that. You're not even talking yet. But when we told you to take off your shoes and put them on the shelf, you did just that. It was bewildering to me! You're so smart.

So then your mom and grandma proceeded to show me all of the new things you can do. They bought you a miniature vacuum and showed you how to "Hoover" the carpet. (Your grandma calls it "Hoovering". For future reference, it's really called vacuuming. Hoover is just a brand of a vacuum... never mind.) They also showed me how you fold the clothes in the basket to help grandma with the laundry. And finally, you were given a whole miniature kitchen set complete with a coffee maker that buzzes, pots and pans, and a toaster that pops up plastic bread.

In the midst of being baffled by how much you can understand, I realized that we are training you to be a housewife. Cooking, cleaning, and doing the laundry. I have to admit my heart sunk just a little. If you want to grow up and be a stay at home mom you absolutely have the right to be that. (Just don't think I'm babysitting your 10 kids.) But I wanted to write you this letter to tell you that you have the OPTION to be something else, anything else, if you choose to do so.

I can't take credit for giving you this freedom. There are many women before us who fought long and hard so that you and I can shape our lives to our liking. And once you are old enough to understand and appreciate this letter, I anticipate and hope that you have even more opportunities than I do now.

You can be an astronaut, an engineer (like your grandpa), a chef, a surgeon, a teacher, a graphic designer, a computer programmer, or even an event planner (like your awesome Aunt). Whatever it is you want to do, I just want you to remember the lesson that your grandpa always told your mom and me: you can achieve anything you set your mind to. The only thing that can hold you back is yourself.

“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” - Elenor Roosevelt

So once you graduate high school and head to college (you're going to college, sister), just remember that you are not only pretty and capable of folding clothes, but you are also SMART and have the potential to accomplish things you never even dreamed.

“Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

Just always remember that I will be one of your biggest cheerleaders as you grow. (Unless you want to be a cheerleader. Just kidding. But please don't be a cheerleader.) And that I will always be here for you. I can't wait to see what life brings you and what you make out of it. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you can't do something. When they tell you you can't, prove them wrong. Because you, like the other strong women in your family, CAN do anything. And most of the time, we can do it better.

Love you always,
Aunt Kali

My Thoughts: e.l.f Cosmetics

I recently purchased the following items online from e.l.f. I've been hearing great things about them and their stuff is so cheap! So I figured I would try some of it out. I got stuff that you can never get too much of  (like shadows) and some unique items that I don't currently use to see what I think!

e.l.f. Studio Endless Eyes Pro Mini Eyeshadow Palette - Limited Edition

  • $10.00    $5.00

I haven't tried these colors out enough to really go either way about it, but I'm more about the way a shadow appears on the skin and how well it lasts during the day. Color preferences are really up to the individual. So, while I'm not crazy how some of the colors show up, they seem to wear well throughout the day. So, for $5 you get a lot of options! Definitely worth it.

e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner

  • $3.00

I'm a fan of the cream eyeliner. But it may just be because I'm a fan of all black cream eyeliners. But, what really did me in was the applicator I purchased to apply it. Now that is fabulous. See next item...

e.l.f. Studio Angled Eyeliner Brush

  • $3.00

This little thingy is awesome. I've never used an applicator brush that was so perfectly angled. You can completely dodge your eyelashes and get right to the spot. Amazeballs!

e.l.f. Studio Daily Moisture Stick

  • $6.00

I'm kind of iffy on this one. I like the idea of just being able to roll on moisture whenever you need it. It's travel size and super cute. But, the after effect is a TAD sticky and I'm really not a fan of any moisturizers that make me feel sticky at all. I would love it if this had SPF in it. Then I could carry it around when I'm outside all day and apply as needed.

e.l.f. Studio Zit Eraser

  • $3.00

I don't think the zit eraser moves mountains like some of the reviews, but it effectively dries out greasy zits (like most pimple creams). So it does the trick with a handy little brush.

Collections Makeup Grab Bag

  • $5.00

So I am not a fan of the pink and cream colors in this shadow set. They don't look good on me AT all and the grey barely shows up, which bothers me. BUT the dark brown at the bottom is now my go-to for the darkest part of my smokey eye and I love it. It also has a HINT of shimmer. Note: I never use these smokey-eye kits to achieve the look. (And I think I have pretty much mastered it.) I always use a mish-mash of shadows and liners until I get it just right. (Maybe I should do a tutorial?)

The mascara is pretty run of the mill. It gets the job done but doesn't lengthen and separate like the more expensive ones do. It also tends to clump.

I like the makeup remover pen. If you're like me you always have a dark line under your eye or a shadow crease on your lid around lunch time. This little guy wipes it off quickly and fits in your purse! The only bad thing about these products is it wipes off everything so your foundation and any base shadow goes with it. But, if you're careful, it's great for touch-ups here and there.

What are your favorite e.l.f. products? Anything I missed that I should try?

/  /  /  /

I'm dreading today like the plague because my doc is making me come in to take blood. She's been wanting me to do this routine test for a year and I keep dodging it. I legit ALWAYS pass out when they take blood. It's probably one of my top 10 things I hate to do. So now I have to fast all day and then go around 4pm. So if I don't pass out from the blood, I'll be passed out from starvation!

Here's hoping your hump day is a LOT better then mine! Bye!!

P.S. The blogging battle is seriously heating up. The bf just passed me in Twitter followers last night and he loves bragging about it! So go follow me on Twitter if you haven't already! Thanks!! #RefuseToLose

Weekend Wrap Up

Just a short and sweet Weekend Wrap-Up for you guys!

Friday: We went to my friends apartment and hung out on her deck with some adult beverages. She lives in the complex we are currently living in, so it was nice to be able to walk home! She also had leftover sparklers so we had some fun with those!

Saturday: Went to the pool but as soon as I got there it started to get really cloudy so I ran some errands and did a little shopping for Mexico! I've bought some pretty fab items lately. Definitely going to snap some shots and share with you all this week!

I also wasn't feeling TOO hot from the night before so it was a lazy night on the couch!

Hanging with 2 Chinz

Sunday: On Sunday I got a craving to see my family. It was a nice (but hot) day out and we had nothing to do so we threw Pipe in the car and drove and hour home to Northern Kentucky to see the fam for a few hours. I got to hang out with my niece, Athena, who is growing like a WEED! We kept telling her to smile and she would cheese hard core. Such a little ham.
We grilled out and played some corn hole in the front yard. Was a great little mini-trip to see everyone.

We also got some good news! We are finally done negotiating on the inspection points for the new house! So I feel like I can finally get excited!! We close on August 2! YAY!
