Go For It!

{A guest post by Kaliwood Kontributor, Amanda}

Those were the exact words my boyfriend, Kyle, said to me when I was approached about a job opening in South Carolina.

I had been at my job in Lexington for nearly 5 years and while I loved it and the people I worked it, I felt it was time to move on and take on a new challenge. Little did I know what type of challenge I would face! I started looking around and reaching out to some people in collegiate athletics whom I had developed great relationships with to see if they knew of anything or could keep me in mind if anything came available at their school. (Which I could do a whole other blog post on the benefits of networking!)

I got an email two days before my birthday – I vividly remember sitting in Kyle’s room reading this message from a coach saying that she knew of an opportunity at the University of South Carolina for the Director of Volleyball Operations and that I should reach out to the coach and in the meantime, she would put in a good word for me. As I read the email to Kyle, he simply said, “What are you waiting for? Go for it!” In a whirl-wind of a timeline, I reached out to the coach, had a phone interview, went for an in-person interview a week later and was offered the job five days later. All of that happened in a matter of 18 days. And I was to let my current employer know, work my final two weeks, and move to South Carolina by the end of the month.

There was so much that had to happen in that short period of time, but it all worked out, as seamlessly as possible, too. It was hard leaving my job at the AVCA – I’d been there since college, at the ripe age of 22! I had grown so much in my professional and personal life there and it was scary walking away from something that was so comfortable. Plus, Lexington had become my home! A place with so many memories, friends, activities, etc. and now I was leaving it all behind for a brand new adventure.

But that's exactly what I had set out to do. Start a new adventure, in a new city, with a new job, with my incredible boyfriend (which as I mentioned in my last post, didn’t blink an eye when I asked him to move with me!). I had dreamed of an opportunity like this – to work in collegiate athletics and finally make a move into a field that had a crazy passion for. I was (am) confident this was going to be a life-changing move for me (in a multitude of ways) and even though I was scared, I was beyond excited. I knew I would make new memories, make new friends, continue to grow personally and professionally and I was excited to get started to see what was awaiting me.

Moving away for a job hasn’t been easy but I wouldn’t change anything about it. (You can read more about my past 6 months here and the adjustment it’s been here) I feel so blessed to have been given this opportunity and all that has come with it. Yes, there have been ups and downs and I’m sure there will be more along the way. But I went for it. I seized the opportunity and took a leap of faith and see the rewards of that each day.

Don’t be afraid to do something scary! That’s what life is about – taking risks and learning from the outcome, good or bad. Go for it!

We were off! Bittersweet morning leaving Lexington for Columbia.

 One of our first nights out in our new city!

This is our life now :)
