Hi there, Kali-wood readers! I’m back and have a great recipe to share with you!

Fried Honey Banana
I have the biggest sweet tooth on the planet and I often don’t have the ability to fight the sweet cravings. So while I’m currently trying to be more health conscious, I like to try and find tasty alternatives to my favorite sweet treats! That’s exactly what happened this week!

I was browsing through Pinterest and came across this gem and decided to make it last night after dinner! (I’ll have to share this dinner post with you next time – not from Pinterest but my best friend shared it with me and it’s delicious!)

Ingredients
Bananas
Honey
Cinnamon
Olive Oil
Water

How-To

  1. Drizzle olive oil in a skillet over medium heat
  2. Slice up the bananas and put them in the pan to cook for 1-2 minutes on each side
  3. Whisk honey (I used about a tablespoon of honey) and 1 tablespoon of water
  4. Remove pan from heat and pour mixture over banana
  5. Cool and sprinkle with cinnamon
  6. ENJOY

These were delicious, however, not as crispy/crunchy as I would have liked. I was probably a little impatient on letting them cook so they ended up being a bit mushy but Kyle and I loved them!

Hope you have a great weekend! We’re heading to Hilton Head for the weekend – only a 2 hour trip!

House of Southern Accents {GIVEAWAY!}

Attention all my lovely ladies from the South (and any others who love a good print) and any male readers (I know you're out there #nojudgement)! I just found your new favorite shop. The next time you think "bow tie", think: House of Southern Accents.

I am personally really excited to support House of Southern Accents because the owner, founder, and seamstress (yes, she does it all!) is a fellow UK alum and AKPsi brother! I admire anyone who has the passion and drive to start their own endeavor, and since this one is so close to home, it's that much sweeter! AND (as if I don't have enough reasons) she's a fellow dog lover! Her pup models the bow & bow tie collar line! Love it!!

I mean, really. How cute is that???

Here is a little bit about how House of SA got started....

In January 2011 my family lost my beautiful cousin Crystal to cancer at the age of 29. My cousin and I were very close and being close in age as well as the only female grandchildren, we grew up more like sisters than cousins. Her house is where I spent much of my childhood drawing, painting, and creating. I remember when she was in her teens and started sketching beautiful dress designs that I was in awe of. Design wasn't her passion though, children were. She became a Kindergarten teacher and used her creativity to inspire her students, but she also inspired me, more than I can ever put into words. Her sketches will always be in the back of my mind, and the strength she had gave me what I needed to set out on a dream of my own.

I knew I wanted to create, but I hadn't quite settled on what I wanted to create. That's where a good friend of mine and a great fraternity come into the picture. My best friend Will needed a date to a fraternity date function and, of course, we wanted to match. He didn't have a bow tie that matched the dress I was wearing so I set out to make him one. That one turned into 4 (one for each date party) and those 4 were the start of everything. That's where we are today, and by "we" I mean myself and my dog.

House of Southern Accents is a one woman shop, the purchase of fabric, design, and creation of each product is completed by store owner, Kyla. Based in Lexington, KY we draw inspiration from our beautiful surroundings and traditions. We're inspired by the well dressed men and women you can find tailgating around Commonwealth stadium in the fall and enjoying a day at the races at Keeneland, by the bourbon trail, and even by front porch sittin' a spell.

My favorite thing about House of SA are the options! There are so many adorable fabrics to choose from! You can truly customize your look, or get a gift for a special person in your life that no one else will have! And since special care is put into each order, you can be sure you are getting a top-quality product. Here are some of my favorites...

So please stop over to the House of Southern Accents website and storefront to browse these adorable products!

And, I have some great news! Kyla, the owner, has offered a customized giveaway to one lucky Kaliwood reader! The winner will receive their choice of a bow/head band, dog collar, or bow tie in a fabric of their choice! Awesome, right? Below are the ways you can get connected with House of Southern Accents.

To be eligible to win the giveaway, use the entry options below. You must first be a GFC follower of Kaliwood to unlock all of the other entry options! The entry period will be open for one week!

Ready, Set, Win!

Happy shopping!

Update in the 'Wood

Hey, strangers! I know I've been MIA but I am finally back home for a while and trying to catch up on life! So, while I'm catching up, here's some catching up on Kaliwood for you!!

10K Training: Officially started this week! I made the mistake of running after dinner and just felt like it was weighing me down. Wasn't the best run but still felt good afterwards! Click here to view my training schedule! I will have to do some re-arranging this week since we are going on a camping trip, but should still be OK. And I should be able to hike/jog while camping.

Which brings me to my next item of business: Yes, I'm going camping. In the middle-of-nowhere West Virginia  And it's like black bear country. Awesome. Somehow Tim convinced me to go along on their annual trout fishing trip. (I must have been 4 glasses of Pinot in when I agreed.)
Pros: Piper is coming as well as our good friends Ash and Dan! And they are bringing their great dane, Duke, whom Piper loves!
Cons: Nature, tents, no modern conveniences, bugs, snakes, bears, dirt, nature....

Growing up, my idea of "camping" was pitching our tent on our living room floor. So, we'll see how this goes. I know my girl, April, feels my pain.

In other news, I went to my friend's wedding last weekend. Isn't it so weird to see someone you've known since you were little getting married?? So crazy, but so fun!

Here's my hurried attempt at an up-do for the wedding that I accomplished in about 15 minutes. There are a couple things out of place, but for the rush I was in, I was pleased with the outcome! Always room for improvement.

In other hair news, sometimes when I curl my hair I do big messy waves that are interlocking and tangled, but lately I've been going with the soft flowing big curls as you see below...

So I will be doing a tutorial of these coming soon!!

Also, wanted to share my new chevron maxi dress that I recently picked up from a cute local boutique. Love it!!! (Please ignore dirty laundry in the background. Ain't nobody got time for that!)

And because I always feel the need to have a token adorable pet photo, here's Piper after a weekend and the grandparents! #passedout

Have a great day!

Shopping in Seattle! (Oh, and Working...)

Hey guys! Sorry I've been MIA for a while. I am currently in Seattle for a site visit for our Convention in December. It's a bit hectic with all the traveling and trying to keep up with work back in the office. So, blogging has taken a back seat!

BUT, I got up early today because I have some very important stuff to share. There is an H&M directly across from our hotel and I went shopping yesterday!!! ( Told you it was important! )

And if you didn't believe I was obsessed with blazers before, there's no denying it now...

Please ignore the iron. Like I said, in a hotel you all. Doing this on the fly!

BAH! Love these shoes!

Yes, the black and dusty rose blazer are the same one. I've been wanting a dusty rose one for a while, and the cut of the blazer is AMAZEballs, so I HAD to get one in black too. I just had to, OK?!!

I wasn't planning on buying a hot pink blazer, but the cut on THIS one was so different an fit me like a glove. Sooooo, I felt obligated.

This casual jacket was a necessity buy because it's chilly/rainy in Seattle and I didn't come prepared! But I really like it, so it'll be a good piece for Spring!

Bad pic quality, but didn't I tell you that cut was amazing??

H&M prices are redic, you guys. I got ALL of this for like $120 (with a $25 gift card). I mean, that's a steal!  And I decided I'm taking Tim there when I get home to get him some inexpensive casual blazers since we've been on the hunt for some. Don't know why I didn't think of H&M right away. They are perfect for that!

And for your viewing pleasure... some Seattle pics!

We will resume regular posting next week.

Also, a very BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my very best friend, Mary!!! Miss her bunches!!!

Have a great rest of the week!!

Training Tribulations

I really don't want to write this post today. But, since the day I announced I was going to run my first ever 10K, I decided that I would use this blog to hold myself accountable. Therefore, I can brag about how I am a BAMF who ran in the rain, but I also have to share my failures. And yesterday, was a failure.

Monday I ran 2.2 miles in the rain and felt great. Yesterday, I got home from work and hit the pavement. I ran the same loop as Monday but it was just one of those days where my legs felt like they weighed 100 pounds each. I got to mile 1 without much trouble but then it just went downhill (while running uphill).

I don't really know how to explain it. Maybe some of my experienced runner friends can relate, but it's when you can't find your stride, you start cramping, and it's miserable. I tried telling myself that there will be times during my 10K where I might not feel great, but I have to keep going. Usually I'm good about pushing myself but yesterday I just stopped and started walking. Which is never good.

I was run/walking for a while and then I was hit with it: the most intense food cravings I've ever had. All I could picture was a giant marshmallow dipped in chocolate. Weird, I know. It got so bad I was about to run to the nearest store and indulge. So, I finished the walk/run, drove to pick up Piper from doggy day-care, and drove through Sonic to get this...

Oreo milk shake. I don't ever really like Oreo milk shakes, but I DEVOURED it. With a spoon. Like I've never tasted anything so glorious in my 25 years.

I have no clue what happened. I've had bad runs before. It happens. I'm sore or feeling full, or just not into it. But this craving thing was new and bizarre. I hope this was a one-time occurrence.

I know it'll get easier the more I train, so I'm looking forward to that. The first few runs getting back into it are always a challenge. Regardless, I will try my absolute best to not give in to any craving that may hit while running again. No matter how much that giant marshmallow taunts me.

(You can't un-see that. Sorry.)

Cue motivational quotes...

Piper accurately illustrates how we both felt last night...

Anyone have a great workout this week to share? Or maybe a not-so-great one like me?

Let me know!

Happy Running!

Brights & Gingham

So lately I've given myself a new challenge. Take clothing that I've had for a while, get creative, and wear it a whole new way. So this week I took this button down that I've had for YEARS, and paired it with one of my favorite spring pencil skirts. It looks bright orange here, but it's actually a perfect mix of orange/red/pink. It's a really unique color. And I ended up loving the outfit!!! Can't wait to try out some more! Save some money on new clothes and just dig into the depths of your closet for new outfits/styles!

10K Update: My "official" training starts in 2 weeks (after all my traveling settles down), but I've been running here and there when I can. Yesterday, Tim and I ran 2.2 miles in the rain! It was the first time I've run in rain, and not going to lie, it kind of makes you feel like a badass! And I'm so glad I have a bf who will run/workout with me! (Even if he is always a half-mile ahead of me!)

Just thought I'd share this little tid-bit. My pony tail was bone straight before the rain run. I came in the house, took off my hat, and saw THIS. Not only does it look like a hot frizzy mess, but it was SO tangled and thick, I could barely brush it out. #maneproblems

I got a belated bday present in the mail yesterday from Amanda! (Your fav SPD guest poster!) How fun to get some gifts just when you are coming down from your bday high!

She knows I like anchors (hence the bracelet) and she got me this cute "K" necklace! Thanks, A!

Have a great Tuesday!! Let's hope the weekend comes fast!! I need some R&R!
