Movie Releases ~ From Book to Big Screen

Nothing gives me quite that feeling of excitement like watching TV and seeing a movie trailer pop up. I love movie trailers. I love the idea that something new is coming out and hoping it's a story that interests me. (Unless it's for a horror film, then I curse the screen and change the channel.)

What's even better is the feeling where you think "Wait.. that looks familiar." And then you realize it's a book you just read! And you do your happy dance. Because the characters you just journeyed with in your head are about to hit the big screen.

Here are the book-to-movies I have recently seen or am about to see in the coming months.. with my thoughts/reviews!

1. Maze Runner - September 19, 2014

I have to admit I haven't read this one. It's the only one on my list I haven't read! But honestly I didn't know anything about it until the previews started popping up. Tim really wants to see it so I'll probably just see it and not read it. I'm a bit hesitant about all of these dystopian novels that are all the rage now, though. The Hunger Games was so good, and I find that I compare all of the others to it. None of them have topped it yet. Book or film.

2. The Giver - August 15, 2014

I understand this was the first dystopian novel, and we have to respect it for that. But the plot only went so far in the book, and even with movie magic, they could only take it so far on the big screen. Now-a-days these novels are so in depth and complex, you can really lose yourself in the books and they make for great on-screen action. This book was just too short and the movie was just too dull. I love the ideas and lessons behind it, but from an entertainment stand point, it fell short.

3. Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - November 21, 2014

Can't wait for the next installment of Katniss and crew! It's been a while since I read the 3rd book, so watching the movie I won't be nitpicking all of the details like I do when I read it right before. I'm also glad they are making the final book into two movies, simply for the fact that it extends our entertainment. I also love that Tim is into these movies (without having read the books) so he gets excited for them too!

4. Gone Girl - October 3, 2014

I'm excited about this one because the story is pretty dark. And I actually hate anything scary or any type of horror movie. But I get the sense this one will be just dark enough to be interesting and suspenseful, without scaring the living shit out of me. The book was good, but I feel that I tend to read everything with a positive outlook. One look at the trailer and I could tell I was reading this book too lightly. It's definitely got an edge to it. And I think Tim will be happy to be dragged to something not so frilly for once.

5. Wild - December 5, 2014

Again, another one I'm excited to see! The book didn't blow my socks off, but it was a good read and had great underlying messages. Hopefully they can jazz up the movie enough so that it's not a snooze-fest. Also, is it bad to say that I think Reese will play a great ex-addict?

Are there any book-to-movies you are excited about?

  1. I tried to read Gone Girl twice and couldn't get through it. The different POVs, the details in it...I just thought the storyline was interesting but the the narrative dragged too much. I do think it will be an amazing movie though. And I'm so glad Hollywood has decided to forgive Ben Affleck for his mistakes of dating Jennifer Lopez and doing two movies with her. He is probably one of my favorite actors and directors and he did some amazing work while everyone was boycotting him because of Gigli.

  2. Yes! I am also so excited for Mockingjay, Gone Girl, and Wild! I can't wait. I feel like it's been awhile since a REALLY good movie came out that I just HAD to see :)
